Holidays – Reykjavik

Holidays – Reykjavik

Iceland may not be your first choice for a holiday, but its capital city, Reykjavik, is a destination that has a lot to offer its visitors, whether it’s an adventure break or a peaceful city trip that you are looking for.

After your flight, you may want nothing more than to relax and unwind and there is no better place for doing this than the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa that is, rather handily, not far from the airport. In the spa you can soak in the shoulder-deep 37 degree milky blue water whilst you are surrounded by snow but if you would prefer, you can also relax by slipping into the sauna, having a cleansing silica face mask and to top it all off you can have one of the trademark blue-coloured cocktails.

Although Reykjavik is the country’s capital city, it is not very big and only has a population of 115,000 so it is difficult to get lost there, however, if you do lose your way it is only a matter of looking for the Hallgrimskirkja, the largest church in the country, as this dominates the skyline.

The church is named after the religious poet Hallgrimur Petursson and is Reykjavik’s most famous landmark. The modern architecture of the building is stunning and so it is perhaps a little disappointing to see the sparse interior compared to the intricate exterior of the building. However, the impressive pipe organ inside is worth a look, as are the impressive panoramic views from the tower.

In the city centre, it is easy to pass an hour in the main street of Austurstraeti by wondering around the shops or just by sitting in one of the cafes. If you are looking for a more cultural activity, then you can head to the Reykjavik Art Museum.

Even though Reykjavik has several museums and a theatre, and can easily keep you occupied for two or three days, if you were to venture inland then Iceland has even more to offer.

If you are looking for "http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/holidays/"holidays that would be ideal for children, then you won’t be let down with Iceland. In the town of Hafnarjordur, just outside of Reykjavik, there is said to be home to one of the richest elf and spirit populations in Iceland and you can go on a tour to visit their secret homes.

When you head east from Reykjavik, you can follow the Golden Circle to look at some of the countries natural physical features: Thingvellir National Park, with an impressive rift valley caused by tectonic plate movement, Stokkur Geysir and Gullfoss (Golden Falls) are all very impressive.

The original Geysir (the Gusher), hasn’t erupted naturally for more than 40 years. The Strokkur (the Churn), is nearby Geysir and although it is said not to be as impressive, it spouts every few minutes roughly 20m into the air and is therefore still breathtaking.

Only a short drive away from these natural beauties is the gigantic thundering waterfall of Gullfoss. You can walk on the path along its edge but be warned about the spray and the ice under-foot in the winter.

For the more adventurous type, you can experience the Icelandic outdoors by ski-dooing (snowmobiling). This can prove to be quite an expensive mode of transport, but you may find that the exhilaration of racing across a glacier during a blizzard to be priceless.

If you don’t fancy this level of excitement on your break, then why not opt for a safer mode of travelling on horseback. Horses arrived in Iceland by being transported by early settlers. Nowadays, there is a ban on imports and exports to prevent the spread of disease.

The breed of horses tend to be short and stocky, Islandshest are thought to be a mild-tempered breed so if you are new to riding, you won’t find it too difficult. In fact, some of the Ishestar Riding Tours horses know the route so well that you can just sit back and enjoy the view.

If you are tempted to visit the beautiful city of Reykjavik and perhaps even explore more of Iceland then it is worth comparing the prices of flights and "http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/holidays/"holidays on the internet in order to find "http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/holidays"cheap holidays to Iceland.

Gene Therapy Ray of Hope for Blindness

Gene Therapy Ray of Hope for Blindness

Researchers have reported success in using gene therapy to treat a rare type of inherited blindness, called Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), according to New England Journal of Medicine online Sunday.

The success will boost hopes for hundreds of thousands of patients with inherited forms of vision impairment, the journal added.

LCA damages light receptors in the retina. Children with the disorder are born with severely impaired vision that deteriorates over the course of their lives until they are totally blind in childhood or adolescence. There has been no treatment for it.

Leber's congenital amaurosis affects about 3,000 people in the United States and perhaps one in every 50,000 worldwide.

Two groups of researcher used a common cold virus as a delivery vehicle, or vector to deliver a normal version of one damaged gene that causes the disease, called RPE65, directly into the eyes of patients.

Although both trials were only testing for safety, patients reported they could see a little better afterwards, the researchers told a meeting of eye specialists in Florida.

The Pennsylvania group treated three patients, ages 19, 26 and 26. Between October and January, Dr. Albert M. Maguire injected a relatively small amount of the vector below the retina in each of the patient's most severely damaged eyes.

Beginning two weeks after the injections, all three patients reported improved vision in the injected eyes, said Maguire of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

They found that light sensitivity had improved about three-fold. The treatment also reduced nystagmus, an uncontrollable roaming of the eye often seen in blind people.

Patients also performed better on more subjective tests. One patient's vision on an eye chart, according to Dr. Jean Bennett, the lead author of the study.

The therapy produced no inflammation in the eye or any other toxic side effects, the researchers said. One patient did develop a small hole in the retina that they believe most likely was a result of the surgery. It did not interfere with vision.

Researchers believed the approach can ultimately be used for a much broader spectrum of disorders, including retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration.

The next stage of testing will involve treating children, whose eyes have deteriorated less and who have a better chance of improving, Ali said.

"We are pretty convinced that once we can do this with younger children we will be able to arrest the damage," said Targeted Genetics Chief Executive Stewart Parker.

Eco-friendly Town Comes to Leeds

Eco-friendly Town Comes to Leeds

The Isle of Man-based Oulton Hall Estates and the Yorkshire firm GMI Property Company Ltd submitted an ‘expression of interest’ document to the Department for Communities and the local government in the autumn of last year.

The expression of interest document stated that there were planning to dig up the A642 Leeds-Wakefield Road and replace it with a dual carriageway.

The proposed sites would see registered green belt land in Leeds being used for an eco-friendly housing estate, which will include the areas Rothwell, Oulton and Woodlesford.

The secret document uncovered a scheme to make a south Leeds suburb into a new eco-town called ‘The Greens.’

Oulton Hall Estates and GMI hope that they will receive the go ahead for the radical scheme.

If permission is granted for the large-scale development the site would include 9,000 carbon neutral homes spreading over 800 acres.

All homes would be installed with electricity saving devices such as sonar panels and wind turbines will be included on all the sites.

The plans also revealed the proposal to develop the surrounding grounds of Oulton Hall and double the size of Oulton.

The expansion of the village of Carlton to at least three times its original size was also included in the plans.

They will also introduce six new schools in the new development and will include both primary and secondary schools.

An Emblem of the new town’s pioneering spirit will be showcased by a giant bubble sculpture at the centre of the town.

The two companies Oulton Hall Estates and GMI are already in control of the 800 acres of the land needed for the scheme.

The proposed sites will initially build 5,000 houses, with plans to increase the number to a total of 9,000 in the coming years.

Leeds Hit With Red Light

Leeds Hit With Red Light

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown was asked if his government favoured London and the South East for investment at the expense of West Yorkshire.

He claimed, “We are investing in every part of the country and the government is making £724m available to regions with major transport schemes this year, as well as investing a further £672 million.

“I don’t think it is true to say that transport spending has been skewed to one particular area. In every part of the country we are spending (on) transport according to the needs of these different areas.”

The Liberal Democrats of Leeds North West said, “It is interesting to hear that Gordon Brown thinks his Government allocates transport spending according to need.

“Well he should come to the Leeds area in rush hour and sit in the traffic jams on our roads or try to squeeze onto out trains then he would realise what we need which is real investment on transport and a fair deal compared to other areas.”

Critics of the government assert that the disparity is also evident with the agreement to bankroll London’s £16bn Crossrail system

This was seen as a direct snub to Leeds as they had already refused to fund the Leeds Supertram.

Concerns were also raised over the disparity in funding for roads and rail funding between Yorkshire and the rest of the country.

During 2006/07, £104 was allocated per person in West Yorkshire, the disparity is apparent in transport spending on London with each person being allocated £399.

Both Labour and Liberal Democratic parties in Leeds agree that Gordon Brown persistently ignores the plight of the commuters in West Yorkshire.

However the Prime Minister insisted Leeds transport network was not in need of large investment.

He explained that all monies allocated to Leeds, was more than enough for the development of its transport networks.

Get Accommodation Close to Your Destination in Star Hotels in London

Get Accommodation Close to Your Destination in Star Hotels in London

During 1830s railway network began to develop in London. Hence number of business or foreign visitors increased. But, there were no accommodation facilities as per modern standards. Mostly; lodging houses were private homes, run by widows. Meanwhile, railway companies also realized the accommodation problem and evaluate it as major setback for railways. First time, railway took the initiative to build railway hotels for the proper accommodation of railway passengers. The building of railway hotel also became the status symbol for railway companies.

The best blooming period of London hotel business was between the two world wars. During 1960s air traveling trend flourished and London hotels defined the new dimension of hotel business. Today, high capacity star hotels are situated all around five major London Airports.

"http://www.a1londonhotel.com/star_hotel_in_london.html" Star hotels in London are known for wonderful architectural heritage and glamour. Visitors can get here the feel of era old rich tradition of British royalty and grand living. There are various ranges of three to seven star hotels in the London which provide wide ranges of basic facilities from business need to family need. Star hotels in London are famous for their best conferencing facility, transportation facility to meet the business need. Similarly; famous parks, museums, restaurants, health club, etc are also available in the hotel premises. These hotels also may provide certain concession for using the facilities or services available in the hotel premises. Although, a few star hotels in London have been exposed by environmental inspector after filing a million dollar suit by American lawyer and his wife upon a reputed star hotel in London but still hotels are not furious and bravely preparing themselves for upcoming challenges. These hotels are determined to prove themselves as the best in the world and ready to mesmerize their visitors so that they come again and again with friends and family.

Star rating has certain criteria which they have to fulfill. One star hotel should provide an informal but competent service. Two star hotels have to provide private facility in all rooms and daily breakfast and dinner services. Three star hotels should have professionally trend staff members and their dining room should be opened for residents as well as non-residents. Four stars hotels must have professionally trained and uniformed staff members. Their restaurant or dining room should serve service to all residents as well as non-residents. These hotels must have designated eating area especially for lunch. Now, five stars hotels which are known as luxurious accommodation. They must provide multilingual services, high quality menu and wine list.

In addition to star rating, some additional star ratings scales are also provided to hotels. These star ratings are AA merit score which is based upon percentage. For instances, red star determines that the hotel is the best amongst best in the UK. Similarly yellow star rating determines that the quality is ten percent above the required quality for four and five star hotels.

Now, definitely there should not be any confusion about star rating.

A Good Antigua Holiday Or Honeymoon Suite Hotel

A Good Antigua Holiday Or Honeymoon Suite Hotel

An Antigua Holiday staying at the Suite Hotel called the Trade Winds above Dickenson Bay could make a lot of sense. The Trade Winds Hotel could also be a good choice for your Antigua Honeymoon, as it is small and intimate, having only 45 rooms, and is definitely a place for the discerning guest.

Best described as peaceful, friendly, and relaxing the Trade Winds Hotel provides the perfect solution for people who don't want to pay the earth, and don't want something that is overly pretentious. Whilst not really what you would describe as a boutique hotel, because that would be pretentious, the Trade Winds nevertheless is similar without the sky high prices.

Being on a hill, the views are spectacular, although the walk up from the beach is steep. Having said that the hotel operates a shuttle bus, so you don't have to walk. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks, because the hill gives you not only the spectacular view, it also means the hotel is away from the noise and bustle, so you do get peace and quiet.

The beach itself, and anyone choosing an Antigua holiday will be mindful of the great beaches the island has, and they will not be disappointed here. You can walk for what seems like miles and the water is such a dreamy shade of blue. There are places to eat, bars, whee if you buy a few drinks, they will supply you with deck chairs.

Reports from guests talk about the fact that the Trade Winds Hotel may be rated as a three star, but the general feeling was it was in truth between four to five star but with three star prices. A little bit of luxury, with very professional and friendly staff, is another often heard comment from the very satisfied guests.

The rooms are large and this cannot always be said when you stay in an hotel on an Antigua vacation. They are also light and airy with a terrace or balcony that looks out over the sea.

The food in the restaurant, called Bay House is excellent with good choices, and you will notice a good many non residents, and locals coming into eat in the evenings. Probably the outstanding part of the evening meals are the desserts. There is also a small pool, sun deck, and bar, and the grounds are lush with tropical vegetation

One of the great things about taking an Antigua holiday at the Trade Winds Hotel is that you will be made to feel like an individual. This means the staff appear to know your room number, your name very quickly, and your likes and dislikes in the way of food and drink. This sort of thing rarely happens when you stay in a larger hotel where it can be quite impersonal.

If you can get your meal plans in place before you go. There are some great restaurants within easy driving reach, so determine what you want to do in the evenings, because if you take the meal plan that includes dinner, you will find that whilst there is a $50ECD limit for breakfast which is no problem anyway, there is no limit for dinner, so you can try all the most expensive dishes and it will be included.. Also be aware that a lot of rooms are permanently booked to BA aircrew, and whilst they can be somewhat boisterous, they do come and go, which adds an air of exclusivity for those permanent, or semi permanent guests.

The Trade Winds Hotel would be a good choice for an Antigua Holiday, and ideal for an Antigua Honeymoon if you want the glamour of the Caribbean, but not some of the ridiculous prices.

Discover Vancouver Island: The Pacific Island Escape With Everything!

Discover Vancouver Island: The Pacific Island Escape With Everything!

There aren't many pacific islands where you can surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon, especially ones that are ranked number one by more than one famous travel magazine, many years running!

But there is one!

An island with a history stretching back as far as the ice age, that perches on the western edge of a great continent and one that is growing very quickly as a "must see" destination.

Only about three hundred and fifty miles in length , Vancouver Island sits in the Straits of Georgia, north-west of Seattle and an hour and forty minutes by ferry from the mainland of British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada. Vancouver Island is home to the capital city of British Columbia, Victoria, and has been since 1850 at which time the interior gold rush brought prospectors and a supporting cast of many people to this pristine island.

Today, the temperate climate, stunning scenery and world class amenities make this island a travelers mecca, and for good reason: or to be precise, many good reasons. English speaking, well actually "Canadian" speaking, easy to drive and everything within fairly short distances helps make any vacation here very enjoyable and relatively stress free, especially as accommodations and food services are widespread, well located and of the highest standard: many rated the best on the continent and some, the best in the world.

But it's the diversity that is the main attraction. Whale watching, body surfing, long cycling trails, wilderness camping, world class spa-resorts, museums, historical sites, famous gardens, ski-ing, sailing, salmon fishing, diving, real wild-life, or spa treatment with a Pacific ocean view. Home grown produce markets, fresh seafoods, local wineries, breweries and cideries, wilderness camping, bed and breakfast or famous five star hotels,

Vancouver Island supports it all and it's there to be discovered. Jazz festivals, art festivals, opera, book fairs, antique fairs, garden tours, agricultural fairs, theaters and ghost walks. Marathons, cycling races, golf, lacrosse, soccer and ice hockey: and even the tall ships make an appearance!

Vancouver island is a celebration of agricultural, maritime and historical; of First Nations peoples and others from many nations. Of British and Spanish and Asian influences against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery: a wilderness with all the amenities. Quality shopping, extensive tourist services, modern transportation and yet, the unusual. Float plane services, eagles on the lamp posts, art galleries on the walls, eight hundred year old trees, sea kayaking and afternoon tea with triangular sandwiches.

But more to the point, what shall we have for lunch!

How about some local oysters to start with, followed by a home grown emu burger on a home baked bun with garden grown tomatoes and locally grown herbs picked fresh for the table. Perhaps some locally made goat cheese and a pint of ale brewed on the premises. Actually I think I will have a small glass of the locally made blueberry port wine with my home grown strawberries, although the flambe' pears look rather nice!

Hey, take some time to Discover Vancouver Island for yourself, you will be glad you did.

Visiting Wineries In The Chianti Region Of Tuscany, Italy

Visiting Wineries In The Chianti Region Of Tuscany, Italy

The Chianti region of Tuscany is a vast region of rolling hills set in the countryside of central Italy. Eight zones divide this region, each with a unique terrior. Wine Trail Traveler visited seven wineries in late October of 2007. Two of these wineries were in the Chianti Colii Senesi zone while the other wineries were in the Chianti Classico zone. Visiting wineries in Italy takes some preparation before you begin your travels.

It is best to make an appointment with the winery for a tour and tasting. Most of the wineries have set prices for tours and tastings ranging from a few euros to 25 euros per person at the wineries we visited. One of the differences we noticed in tasting in Italy compared to the United States was in the stemware. Five of the seven wineries used large stemware by Schott, Bormioli, Spiegelau or Riedel. In the United States, we only encountered fine stemware at three wineries out of 130. Another difference you will encounter is the number of labels. The average number of labels we encountered at the Italian wineries was six. Many American wineries offer twenty and occasionally over thirty different wines. Most wine tastings offer three wines to taste in Italy, five or more at wineries in the United States. Often the amount of wine poured for a tasting is greater in Italy than at wineries in the United States. Tasting rooms are generally larger in many of the wineries we visited in the United States.

Locating the wineries in the Chianti region can be a challenge. Their address is often the name of a town rather than a street with a physical address. We added the GPS coordinates for the wineries we visited at the end of the articles. Using the coordinates and a GPS will make finding the wineries an enjoyable experience. Although there are superstrata (expressways) that you can travel, much of your traveling will be on country roads. The traffic on these country roads is minimal. We encountered more traffic on California Route 29 in late February in two days than we did on country roads in the Chianti region in two weeks. This afforded us the opportunity to view the beautiful countryside and negotiate the winding roads. The country roads are wider than the country roads in the United Kingdom, so you do not need to cringe each time you do encounter another automobile or bicycle.

Some Tuscan wineries offer lodging facilities. We stayed at a winery and vineyard, seven kilometers from the medieval town of San Gimignano. Mormoraia has several apartments. We rented a two-bedroom apartment on the first floor of what use to be a convent. The design of the apartment was in the Tuscan style, highlighted by brick and stone floors, walls and ceilings with gentle arches. The apartment provided plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen was one of the smallest rooms. There was enough space for two people to cook if good at dancing around each other. A large table, chairs and buffet encompassed the dining room area. The dining room opened onto a living room area that had two sofas for lounging, reading and watching television. There were spectacular views from the apartment. We were blessed one morning when a fog had settled over the landscape. Only the towers of San Gimignano pierced the fog. Daily walks through the vineyard offered a quiet respite and a time for reflection.

When visiting the Tuscany area of central Italy, take time to visit some of its wineries. There are hundreds to choose from, and many are small production and not open to the public. Read the Wine Trail Traveler reviews of these wineries to begin your search.

The Art Of Travelling Light

The Art Of Travelling Light

Travelling is always good for the soul and refreshing for the spirit. You get to see new things, new faces, and new places. And when you travel to another part of the world, you get to immerse yourself in customs and ways of living that are different from what you're used to. But sometimes, with all the backpacks and luggage you bring with you, it becomes tiring, which is wrong. Travelling should rejuvenate you, not wear you down.

This is why you should learn to travel light. You should be able to enjoy your journey, and you won't be able to do this if you keep worrying yourself over the large amount of luggage you have with you. Always stick to bringing bare necessities, whether you're going away for the weekend or on a week-long trip. Here are a few tips to help you travel light.

Getting Away for the Weekend

If you're planning on a weekend getaway, a small backpack should be enough. Bring only the stuff that you're going to need. Bring your necessary toiletries (not your entire bathroom!), a few changes of clothing, and anything else you might need.

A Week Or A Few Weeks' Travel

A backpack is your best pick if you're going away for a week or so. Aside from bringing along your necessities like toiletry and stuff, you'll need to bring enough clothing. Make sure to pack a few pair of jeans as opposed to dresses and skirts. This will cut down the weight of your baggage as jeans can easily be mixed and matched with tops. Also, try to bring just one pair of shoes that will go along with the clothes you bring.

Long Trips and Overseas Travel

This type of travel requires larger travelling cases. It follows that you should pack your personal necessities like you would when going on a weekend trip. Don't bring your whole wardrobe, though. Bring a week's worth of clothing. But before you pack, make sure you know the climate and weather of the place you're travelling to.

If, for example, you live in San Francisco and you're traveling to the tropics, leave behind your windbreakers. Bring a few days' worth of clothing and buy the appropriate wardrobe when you get to your destination. Just one rule you can't forget: don't forget you passort!

Self Restraint and Balance

Most of the time, people tend to over pack because they can't bear to leave a cute outfit sitting at home. People either go away on a weekend trip and end up bringing a weeks' worth of extra clothing. But there are also others who have a problem with "under packing". Have you have friends over on weekends that bring just their toothbrush? And so you end up lending them your clothes and other stuff. Sure, there's no harm in this, but it can get a little annoying.

Choosing a Light Bag

Aside from the things you need to bring, you also have to take into consideration the weight of your bag. Make sure you choose a lightweight, but durable bag. Steer clear of large back packs - this will only tempt you to bring more stuff and you'll never learn the art of traveling lightly.

Traveling light is hard to master as different travels bring forth different needs, especially when you're traveling to a new place for the first time. There is this propensity to anticipate, which also leads you to over pack. But take a tip from your past trips and you'll be amazed at freedom and enjoyment you will get.

Conceptualize Your Plan When You Purchase Timeshare Resort

Conceptualize Your Plan When You Purchase Timeshare Resort

Copyright (c) 2008 Bryant Anderson

Timeshare has nothing to do with sharing time with other people. It is basically about purchasing the rights to use a piece of property. And this is just not any ordinary property, we mean property that you desire to spend time in for vacation. Which is why you need ample time and take it slowly before you purchase timeshare resort. Basically, timeshare is the right to own a property and be able to use it. The most common timeshare properties is the good old condominium unit. But there are a whole lot of timeshare resorts. And just as there are several resorts, there are also different kinds of timeshares: deeded timeshare, right-to-use timeshare, to name a few

You can own a timeshare like you would own a house or a piece of land, although there are variations or types. One type of timeshare allows you to have a complete ownership of a property. In this case, your purchase will come with a deed of sale. Another form of timeshare operates on a leasing system or a points system. Although their differences are obvious differences, the fundamentals are the same - timeshare is a unit of real estate that you can buy, sell, or trade.

Not all timeshares are made alike, and there are really timeshares that are simply small shares. These are what you can call "token shares" or shares that you can use to use a resort for an extended time period, give as a gift, exchanged internally by members of a group of resorts, or exchanged externally with members of others resorts.

There are some things you need to keep in mind when you want to buy timeshare resort.

- Keep in mind that timeshares are not investment vehicles. You purchase them for the experience of an extended holiday at a resort. So have that kind of mindset when you're on the prowl for some timeshare that you can buy. Will you desire for a holiday in that resort for years to come?

- Know what you want in a vacation place. Remember, you're buying for the vacation experience. So, follow your happiness and jot down all things you'd like in a vacation resort. Do you like the beach? Or do you like something a little more earthly? Price should not be your only consideration in buying timeshare. You should also know your desires and wants.

- When you're planning on your next holiday, make sure that you have on your itinerary to visit timeshare resorts. Get a tour guide if you need to, and talk to timeshare owners about their experiences. You will find that doing a little research helps you a lot in choosing which timeshare resorts are best for you.

- Before signing any document related to your purchase of a timeshare, make sure that you have thoroughly read and more importantly, thoroughly understood, the terms and stipulation of the timeshare. Don't be shy about asking the resort's representatives if there's anything you do not understand in the document.

What To See In Seville

What To See In Seville

Seville, situated in the south of Spain is an historical, cultural and financial center of the province of Sevilla. The two thousand years of its history have seen many different groups of people settling in its surrounding area and they have all added to its vibrant and colorful development.

Seville's main tourist season is from August to September and during the times of the annual festivals. It is a treat to experience the city during these festivals. Seville hosts a week long somber religious festival, known as Semana Santa (Holy Week). During the festival, hooded penitents march along the crowd-packed streets followed by large floats. The week after the Semana Santa festival, Seville hosts an annual performance known as Feria de Abril (April Fair). It runs for a week, but in contrast to the Semana Santa it is lively and full of fun. You will find thousands of marquis, and be able to enjoy food, drinking and dancing at all times of day or night. You will be able to see men mounted on stunning horses and women wearing striking flamenco dresses.

If you enjoy flamenco, you can watch flamenco performances that occur during the day. Seville boasts a gastronomically pleasing cuisine that reflects its rich history and culture. Try one of the many tapas bars that can be found in the city. You can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides around the cathedral that will take you through parks and past other attractions of interest. It is simple to book walking tours of the city, the cathedral or the alcazar palace. Bull fights occur at the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza. It is certainly an interesting experience for those who are not squeamish. Open air markets are set up in most parts of the city and they are pleasant to wander through. Be aware, however, that most vendors are closed on Sunday.

You can rent a bike in Maria Luisa Park or climb to the top of the Cerro de Carambolo. This hill is outside the city, although it is easily accessible and is worth the trip for the view of the city from the top. You can also choose to take a boat cruise along the River Guadalquivir.

There is a large variety of accommodation available in Seville. In fact, it boasts approximately 20,000 sleeping options. You can find luxury hotels down to simple guest houses. Many townhouses been converted into guest accommodation and these are often charming little hotels with Andalusian style architecture and pretty courtyards. Be aware that many of the cheaper hotels are undergoing renovations in order to upgrade into smarter hotels. This is inflating the prices of some of the previously inexpensive sleeping options and they are becoming harder to find.

Especially during the summer months, from August to September and during the annual festivals, in April, Seville is a popular tourist destination and as such its holiday accommodation books up quickly. Book your accommodation well in advance if you are coming during those times or you may find that you cannot get a room.

Holidays To Kos For Beaches, Restaurants And Nightclubs

Holidays To Kos For Beaches, Restaurants And Nightclubs

You will find that the beaches, restaurants and nightclubs will be exciting for your holiday to Kos. The most popular beach in Kos is Kardamena. The water is so clear and blue off of this beach. There are taverns and restaurants by the beach, which makes it a great beach for sunning and refreshments. The other beach is Kefalos, which is just amazing. It is a beach with plenty of room to spread out.

The other beach that has many taverns and cafés is Lambi. The beach area is more organized than the other beaches, but it is a beautiful beach to enjoy. The three other beaches in the area are Psalidi, Tingaki and Marmari. Some of the beaches with black sands are less populated during the day hours. Whether you want to enjoy some water activities or such sit in the sun, the color of the sand will not matter. The water is blue as blue can be and that is what brings people to the beaches. The sands are warm and you will need a shoe or sandal to wear.

The waterfront restaurants are spectacular to dine at any time of the day. If you want a sidewalk street dining experience, Barbas is the place to go. The cuisine is divine. Now, Kamagio is a unique little restaurant where the owner actually catches the fish that is prepared for that day. He walks around in a wet suit. If you want something, he will dive in and catch it for your dinner. This is a truly unique dining experience. The other place to try for some great cuisine is Petrus. This is a wine bar with a Greek menu. These are just some of the finest places to dine in Kos.

The nightlife is fun and filed with excitement. The night turns into one big party with everyone hitting the nightclubs and taverns. The two most popular bars are Heaven and Kalua. These two places have a garden and the water as a background. If you would like to try a coffee drink with liquor, Aesolos is the place to go. It is amazing what they can do with a cup of coffee. Greek music can be heard exclusively at Hamam while the Fashion Club is always the fashionable place to be. The nightlife will make the entire trip exciting and you will learn a little about the customs and culture.

Getting to Kos is going to be easy. You can take a ferry connection from Rhodes or you can take a plane to the airport. The ferry rides from Rhodes is so much nicer than flying in all the way to Kos. You can enjoy the open water and see some of the marine life that is found in the waters. The ferry ride is enjoyable and relaxing. It is a great way to start a vacation. Your New RV - Ensuring it is in Top Condition

Your New RV - Ensuring it is in Top Condition

For families who want to travel together without the hassle of having to jump on a plane every time they decide to take a trip, recreational vehicles are becoming a very popular alternative. They are comfortable and offer the feeling that you are at home, even while traveling across the country.

If you are fortunate enough to have a large financial budget, you can purchase a brand new luxury recreational vehicle that will bring you many years of happiness and comfort. However, most people don't have that kind of money laying around, so you may need to consider purchasing a second-hand recreational vehicle.

Whichever RV you choose to buy, it is important to get a full inspection done before signing a contract or putting down any large sum of money. One of the worst things you can do is to hurry into buying something only to find that you have brought home a lemon.

Given the expense, this consideration is even more imperative when buying a used RV. Since the recreational vehicle that you will be buying will be used extensively for traveling on the road, it has to be in good shape and road worthy.

A previously owned recreational vehicle may or may not come with a warranty. Either way, you will want to be sure that it won't wind up in the shop every time you want to take a trip.

Seeking the advice and skills of an expert of your choosing to look it over from top to bottom is a good way to limit the risk exposure that you are not buying something with defects or bad mechanics. A professional will be able to inform you quickly if you are going to be putting a lot of money into repairs or if the RV will be great with minimal - or no - additional labor.

It isn't only the engine you want to check. Since most RV's come with extensive amenities, verify they are all in good working condition. That includes the stove, microwave, television, and even making sure the couch and tables fold down properly.

It is critical that you take it for a test drive, just as you would if you were buying a new car. However, you should make this trip a little longer. Additionally, it is possible that your RV showroom offers rentals; securing one for a few days would help you make a more well rounded decision about which model you would like to purchase. It will also allow you an opportunity to determine whether the one you want runs well and is truly in good condition.

You definitely do not want to put a lot of money into a recreational vehicle and find afterward that is has significant and expensive problems. If you don't yet have a trusted mechanic who is familiar with RVs, take the time to locate one who has no vested interest in your purchase. Because the more thorough your inspection of the vehicle prior to purchase, the happier you will be on the road.

Travel on the Cheap With Your Money Clip

Travel on the Cheap With Your Money Clip

Finding it impossible to give you family a summer break? Think again. There are ways to travel on the cheap with your money clip.

Can You Afford a Summer Break?

With prices rocketing to astronomical highs, the prospect of vacationing with children this summer can dampen one's insatiable wanderlust. But before ditching the idea of a summer sabbatical, how about stomping on the less traveled by-ways? There are great getaways in the heartland, which you never heard about yet these are equally enchanting and entrancing without your money clip or your wallet running on empty.

To get things going, the first thing to do is to plan the vacation ahead of time and decide where to go, where to stay, and how to have the fun and adventure on limited resources - meaning, vacationing like the Vanderbilts without having to end up with an empty money clip.

Instead of sailing out to far exotic places, visit the neighboring states - the nearer the better - and along the way, pay a visit to family and friends. You'll have a good time remembering the good old days, and your kids will have the chance to catch up with their cousins, aunts and uncles, and grandparents.

Summer Treats for Different Trips

For a successful budget vacation, select nearby states with lots to offer in terms of family fun and spectacular views. Add up the cost of all the bus rides for the entire family and the stops at lodging houses along the way (if necessary). If the expense is just a few hundred dollars more, opt to gas up and drive away into the summer sunset and enjoy the views after stuffing your money clip with the budget for the day.

If you leave in Boston, Pasadena, or New York and love to gawk at old but opulent mansions, head out to Newport in Rhode Island to tour the pre-World War II Rosecliff house. Or, if the Blue Mountains and a laid-back atmosphere is your cup of tea, Carroll County in Virginia is your answer.

Holidaying couples can have stretches of isolated beaches or shorelines without having to go to the Caribbean in Cape May. Drive out there if you're anywhere near Philadelphia. At the beach, you won't have to take a bulky wallet; your money clip will do. Like a boy scout, you'll have to be ready just in case.

Or, you can visit family along the way. A night or two with the relatives can ease up the vacation budget without diminishing the fun. You won't have to check your vacation fund or your money clip to see if you can still make a go of it to the nearest vacation spot.

Helpful Tips

Here are other tips to vacation cheaply:

* For the road trip bring tons of non-perishable food because restaurant food is costly.

* Instead of checking into hotels and renting a vacation cabin, pitch a tent in a populated and designated camping grounds.

* Cook meals for the family in the campsite. Eating outdoors is exciting and out of the ordinary for the kids long cooped up school cafterias.

* For sightseeing in neighboring counties, take the bus, instead of gassing up your pick-up truck.

See? There are endless possibilities to enjoy your summer on a budget. Just take a good look around and plan ahead and hold to your money clip.

Renting a Car in Townsville

Renting a Car in Townsville

Getting a cab in Townsville can be both expensive and not particularly reliable. Townsville is doesn't have a huge population and the cab services there are certainly not up to the standard of other Australian cities such as Sydney or Brisbane. If you intend to use taxis a lot during your stay, why not try renting a car and at least you will never have to hang around waiting for the taxi to show up. The problem is finding a company that doesn't rent cars in poor condition that sound like they should be on the junk heap. Well maybe not that bad, but sometimes, the people that assist you in car rentals just don't have your best interest in mind, so you end up paying a lot of money for frustration. So here are a few pointers to help.

Using the internet is a good way to rent a car because some sites let you set a limit on what you are prepared to pay. These firms will try to get the best deal for the car that you'll get and might just toss in unlimited mileage and upgrades, all of that without spending an extra dime out of budget. It is not unusual to find that package deals that incorporate a flight and rental car, provide other incentives such as a vehicle upgrade for instance although this is rarely the case if you book with one of the airlines directly. If you do not need to organize your car rental with the airline, try a company that is outside the airport you are landing at and you will see they are much more competitive.

Just remember that you are likely to come across some solid deals on the internet if you look. Some budget car rental sites even go as far as internet only discounts. Aside from that you can easily get upgrades and depending on the season, at least one of the Townsville car rental companies is bound to have a special offer that can help you save money. The biggest benefit to all this is it can take only a few minutes to do this if you are using the internet.

Sometimes, just when you think you have managed to get a really good deal, you find your credit card company has another surprise when you realize it has organized a discount with the company on top of any you have already arranged. Many of the better known car rental companies have arranged special deals with large organizations to ensure they have more business. Check with your credit card company to find out if you are a member of one of these.

Another tip is to check you rental car carefully and let the company know of any damage you find before you drive away. For you own peace of mind and financial well-being, check out all the vehicles controls and make sure everything that is fitted works so you won't have to pay for something that was faulty when you drove it away. Car rental companies in Australia will not be shy about charging you for damage so don't be shy about checking over your car.

Regarding insurance, sometimes your own car insurance covers car rentals, so have a look see before you buy insurance from the rental company. Even though budget car rental isn't going to cost you a fortune, there is no point in paying it if you are already covered. So don't think that it isn't important either because insurance is still required in Australia.

If you like to have you car upgraded, then try arriving at the rental car company's offices as they open and you may find that owing to the number of cars that have not been returned at that time, you may be offered an upgrade at no charge. Be sure not insist that you want a smaller car and they will be forced to upgrade you at no extra cost.

Townsville is a great place and having a car to explore can really make your time there a lot easier than relying on taxis and public transport.

Volunteer in Cambodia and Help Create New Hopes After Turmoil

Volunteer in Cambodia and Help Create New Hopes After Turmoil

The Kingdom of Cambodia or Cambodia is a small Southeast Asian nation. It is bordered by Vietnam to its east, Laos to its north, and Thailand to its northwest, and the Gulf of Thailand to its southwest. This once mighty Khmer Empire was plundered and looted by all its neighbors, converted into a colony by France and faced political turmoil leading to lack of development for the last 500 years or so. In 1970, Cambodia was plunged into turmoil due to civil war and suffered under the Khmer Rouge's terribly brutal region of terror. However, in 1993, UN sponsored elections in this country, which has helped Cambodia to totter back onto its tiny feet again. A very poor country, Cambodia requires volunteers to help with various programs and projects including health, sanitation, education, restoration, etc.

While much of the Cambodian population still earns less than $1 USD per day, the governmental infrastructure remains questionable. While security situation has improved considerably, now more and more tourists are rediscovering the lost glory of this country. Blessed with wonderful Wats or Temples, long, clean beaches, a trip to Cambodia is still an adventure, but a likeable and enjoyable one. From Siem Reap to Sihanoukville - Cambodia is slowly gearing up for change and volunteering in Cambodia means being able to leave an indelible mark in this transition period.

Why Volunteer In Cambodia

Volunteering in Cambodia is bound to be an adventure as the country has so much to offer. From mystics to mountains, from sea to shopping, experience a different way of life in the nation as you spend your time volunteering to teach conversational English across the major cities including Phnom Penh, the capital. Whether you live independently or as part of a group of international volunteers, you'll work towards raising money for community work, providing better opportunities to the locals to improve their lifestyle, and help them become more self-reliant. After 3 decades of massive civil unrest, Cambodia is finally back on the tourism map for Southeast Asia. Volunteering in Cambodia for travel projects can be a fun as well as thrilling experience. While poverty and scars of a ravaged and disturbed past are unavoidable, the Khmer people are graceful, charming, and warm even in these trying times.

Types Of Projects Available

If you're interested in volunteering in Cambodia, there is a virtual inexhaustible inventory of volunteer opportunities. Mayfair in London - a Brief History

Mayfair in London - a Brief History

Mayfair has been a buzzing and constantly popular location in London, due to it's Central Location, and particularly due to it's proximity to the adjacent Hyde Park.

The name Mayfair (May Fayre) has it's roots in the annual fair that was held in May, that moved from busy Haymarket and Piccadilly to these quiet streets especially around Curzon Street and Shepherd Market.

The fair took place for two weeks every May, until 1708 when it was stopped by the intervention of the local residents.

They were unhappy with the behaviour of the revellers. Their complaints included Drunken Behaviour, Prostitution & Fornication, Gambling and of course Lewdness was rife.

Other attractions included Fire-Eaters, Prize Fighting, Jugglers and Trinkets for sale.

In 1738 Edward Shepherd who had built a cattle market (and many houses) in Mayfair' Shepherd Market area, reinstated the May Fayre.

His efforts only lasted 12 years however, as regrettably in 1750 the Fayre was shut down again as too many things went wrong, and the public scandal had it's rapid effect.

Well, you know all about Newton's Law of Motion, every action has an equal and opposite reaction !

A little of the May Spirit (two kinds !) lingers in Mayfair today - as May Day Celebrations on the first Sunday in May still take place in Shepherd Market.

Most of the Mayfair area was built from around 1660 to 1760 consisting of six great estates. Only the Grosvenor Estate still exists today - owned privately by the Duke of Westminster, the richest man in the UK, who is of course a blood relative of Her Royal Majesty The Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II herself still owns a large swathe of the West End of London in her varied Portfolio.

Thanks to Mayfair's expansion in the 18th Century, the Aristocracy moved there, away from the then very popular and fashionable areas of Covent Garden and Soho.

Mayfair remains extremely fashionable today and is mostly leased by foreign companies and wealthy Private Individuals from all countries on the globe.

A strong accent that you will often hear in Mayfair's Pubs today is the American drawl.

Now that we are talking about Pubs, a few kind old words are in order from The Temperance Association -

"Dare to say 'No' when you're tempted to drink,

Pause for a moment, my brave boy, and think ---

Think of the Wrecks upon life's ocean tossed

For answering 'Yes' without counting the cost"

Nowadays of course this also applies to Ladies, as they drink an equal amount to Men (or more on many occasions) as is clearly visible on any given day or night in Mayfair and elsewhere.

Do you fancy a drink in one of Mayfair's many Old Public Houses ?

Top 5 Horse Riding Holiday Destinations

Top 5 Horse Riding Holiday Destinations

"http://www.equestrian-escapes.com/RidingprogrammesSee-id128.html" "Horse Riding Holiday Cheshire, UK"5. Horse Riding Holiday Cheshire, UK

What with the so called “Credit Crunch” and our nation’s economic instability, people feel as if they have to look after all the money that they have, and even the notion of going on a luxury holiday may seem ridiculous, but have no fear, there is the perfect remedy to this irritating problem. Some of the world’s finest riding opportunities can be found right here at home in the UK, so whether you’re an experienced rider or you just think that it looks like fun, there is always a fantastic holiday available, at a very reasonable price. Cheshire is home to beautiful woodlands and scenic riding trails that run through some of the most picturesque scenery that the UK has to offer, and if that’s not enough,  Equestrian Escapes even offers a “Horses and Chocolate” package, in which you can ride to your hearts content and then indulge in heavenly home made truffles!

4. Trail ride and training in Spain

Epona Equestrian Centre, located just 20 minute from Seville airport, is based within the walls of a stunning 16th century Hacienda. Here you will find over 65 horses and ponies, a vast array of stables and horse arenas, as well as an outdoor swimming pool, comfortable bed rooms with all the modern facilities and an enormous scenic garden. The fantastic thing about this holiday is that it contains a huge variety of activities to take part in, such as hacking through wonderful olive groves and eucalyptus trees, watching fantastic riding demonstrations at The Royal Riding School in Jerez, as well as benefiting from the professional lessons that are available from the Epona staff. The difference between Epona and many other holiday resorts that offer horse riding is that Epona is designed for genuine equestrian enthusiast, not just tourists who fancy a bit of riding in the sun.

3. Ride Lusitano Horses in Portugal

If your idea of a perfect holiday is to sit back, relax and just enjoy the sun, then this holiday probably isn’t for you, but if you get your kicks from partaking in wonderful riding opportunities, in an area of extreme natural beauty, surrounded by likeminded people then you’ve found your perfect holiday! The equestrian centre is home to Nuno Baptista, a national horse riding judge, member of the Portugal national dressage team and head instructor at the centre, who will be available to give you pointers on your riding, and for the more adventurous of you, he can even teach you how to drive a traditional Portuguese horse carriage. If fast paced thrills aren’t your idea of a good time, then various scenic hacks through the beautiful Portuguese cork and olive trees that surround the equestrian centre are available. All of the horses here are pure bred Lusitanos, which means that they are bred and trained to the highest standard for your riding pleasure. The equestrian centre is also home to many fantastic facilities, including an indoor arena and an Olympic sized outdoor arena, so if you take your horse riding as seriously as you take your relaxing, then this is the perfect holiday for you!

"http://www.equestrian-escapes.com/RidingprogrammesSee-id51.html" "Horse Riding on the beach in Spain"2. Horse Riding on the beach in Spain

Needless to say, riding a beautiful horse across a sunlit Spanish beach, sitting in a hugely comfortable traditional Spanish saddle is an experience that is very hard to top. Galloping across a beautiful, deserted Tarifa beach, with the salty air flowing through my horses’ mane is definitely an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Tarifa is a lovely little town, which is made wonderfully accessible by being located close to Malaga, Jerez and Gibraltar, and it is home to some of the finest riding and dining that Spain has to offer. The fact that large areas of Tarifa are designated as National Park means that the scenery and wildlife are largely unspoiled, as if they have been saved there especially for your pleasure. Tarifa is also home to some of the most unique riding experiences available in Spain, such as a fantastic ride across sand dunes and through cork forests to reach the hidden town of Paloma Baja, an area almost completely unknown to tourists. If that hasn’t convinced you enough, then you will be pleased to learn that there are many other activities available in this wonderful area of Andalucia, such as windsurfing lessons, kite surfing lessons, whale watching and even a day trip to Africa!

"http://www.equestrian-escapes.com/RidingprogrammesSee-id107.html" "Horses and Italian Castles"1. Horses and Italian Castles

What could be better than fabulous riding opportunities, good food, fine wine and the fantastic surroundings of a 16 century castle? In my opinion there isn’t an equestrian holiday available that sounds more appealing than equestrian-escapes “Italian castle hideaway break”. As you may have already guessed, your lodgings for the duration of your stay are not a bog standard hotel in the middle of a busy town; you will be staying at a breathtaking Italian castle, located in a wonderful area of the Italian countryside an hour and a half from Rome. The riding trails that are chosen are both hugely scenic and historic, and they take you through beautiful old farming areas, alongside amazing volcanic lakes and through stunning towns, such as the fortified village of Orano. If staying in a castle doesn’t quench your thirst for historical masterpieces, then you can also take up the opportunity of exploring the remains of an ancient Etruscan village in the nearby vicinity. Despite this busy schedule, you will still have plenty of time to relax by the pool, and indulge in the local delicacies, such as fine cheeses and wines, which in my opinion makes this holiday the perfect equestrian getaway for any rider, young or old!

Have You Found Any HIdden Treasures?

Have You Found Any HIdden Treasures?

The Thaddeus Kosciuszko Memorial is a hidden treasure. It's the smallest U.S. National Park - .02 acres. Thaddeus Kosciuszko was a Polish-born, American Revolutionary War hero, whom Jefferson described as the purest son of liberty he'd ever known. The memorial is one room in a narrow, Philadelphia road house, where Thaddeus lived for seven months in 1797 when he petitioned Congress for back pay. If he'd known he was going to have his own national park, I doubt he'd have asked his secretary to find a place "as small, as remote and as cheap" as possible. His memorial teaches us history and to be careful what we ask for.

The Eiffel Tower, one of the seven wonders of the modern world, isn't hidden and it wasn't meant to be a treasure. Gustave Eiffel originally planned to build the tower in Barcelona, as part of Barcelona's Exposition Universal. After Barcelona turned him down, Eiffel submitted his plans to those in charge of Paris' Exposition Universal, who were having a design contest for the exposition's entrance arch. Although Eiffel won the contest, the contest terms stipulated "the arch" would be torn down in twenty years. When the time came, however, France didn't have "de Gaulle".

What Texas Monthly has every five years is a search for the state's best barbeque. After traveling over 15,000 miles and trying 341 barbeques, they found Snow's Barbeque in the small town of Lexington. What they found at Snow's was Miss Tootsie. Miss Tootsie, who's a school custodian during the week, has been cooking barbeque for forty-two of her seventy-three years. She says the secret to her barbeque is the combination of heat, smoke, salt, pepper and time. Now that Snow's is #1, Miss Tootsie has gone from cooking 300 pounds of meat to 1,000 pounds - and Snow's is only open Saturdays. Because they often sell out in two hours, the locals think Snow's has gotten too big for its ... brisket.

Before 1972 Gunnison Beach in Sandy Hook, NJ was a military base, where soldiers occasionally skinny dipped. When the base was decommissioned, it officially became a clothing-optional beach. On summer weekends as many as 5,000 people go there. Bathers are all races and ages, but most are over 50. Most bathe nude, many are topless and a few are in swimsuits. Even at a hidden treasure not everyone wants to reveal their hidden treasures.

Obtaining an Australian Travel Visa

Obtaining an Australian Travel Visa

Australia is an amazing country, and the mainland itself comprises most of the continent of Australia. Due to the country's beauty and popularity, many people like to go there for holidays and business purposes alike. Since Australia is a foreign country, one must apply for a visa to go there. There are many requirements for acquiring a visa, and depending on why you want to visit Australia, a different kind of visa will be necessary.

For those who want to move permanently to Australia and become a worker of some sort, a skilled immigration visa is appropriate. To apply for this visa, you should be forty five years of age or less, be proficient in English, know what occupation you are going to apply for, and be able to prove that you are competent in that profession. To do this, you must pass an exam and show documentation of experience in the field. Also, if English is a secondary language of an applicant, they must pass an additional test showing they are fluent in the language.

If you have an Australian family member who is willing to sponsor your visit to Australia, and usually allow you to take residence with them, then obtaining a visa can be somewhat simpler. The sponsor guarantees that the visitor will leave Australia before the visa expires, and if they fail to ensure this, stiff penalties apply. This visa should be used for anyone visiting family, and if there is no business or medical activity occurring. The family member pays the application fee (upon which the visitor can reimburse their family upon arrival), and may also need to cover a security bond. The terms of this visa allows the holder to visit once, but stay between three and twelve months. Only under special circumstances are people allowed to stay for a full year on this visa.

The Electronic Travel Application has made getting a visa to Australia easier than ever, as the process can be done on the Internet. There are three kinds of ETAs, known as holiday and visiting, short stay business, and long stay business. Holiday ETAs allow people to enter the country multiple times over a period of a year. However, each visit is supposed to be limited to three months or shorter.

Short stay business visas are for businesspeople that come to Australia occasionally for meetings or other things of that nature. Those who travel frequently would not be suited to this type of ETA, as it only permits one visit every three months. Long stay ETAs are actually quite similar to short term ETAs, except you are allowed to stay for at most three months on your trip.

Since ETAs can be obtained online, many people take this route, as it is the simplest. Several websites offer ETA processing, and all they require is a valid passport, credit card, and some other identifying information. After completion of an application, a reference number is provided so the user can go back to the website later to check their status, as well as print materials.

A basic visa application, for most types except sponsored family, is around $55. If you go through a website and utilize ETA, there may be additional fees that are contingent on the site itself. Most people are willing to pay these fees in exchange for the convenience of being able to get a visa online.

Traveling with Children Made Easy

Traveling with Children Made Easy

First, think about mode of transportation. If you are going in a car, you have more flexibility in terms of activities for children than if you are in a plane or other public transportation. Secondly, think about the age of the children. Very young children are likely to sleep a lot; teens are likely to complain a lot; middle kids are likely to elbow each other and ask, "are we there yet?" or sing "Ninety-nine bottles of beer on the wall."

There are a couple of characteristics of kids that are really significant to the travel problem. First off, a bored child is unpleasant to be around. Secondly, when children have a period of active play, they can settle down for awhile. Thirdly, always, always, always at least go into the restroom and try during every stop. How to put all this together: No matter what form of transportation you are using, there needs to be a period of high energy activity before sitting down.

You are going to look strange at the airport doing jumping jacks or running in place, but the other passengers will appreciate it when your kids get in their seats and promptly go to sleep. If you are traveling in a car, the same thing applies. Come up with some high energy games (races, relays, frisbee, whatever) for every rest stop. When you are getting to the point of needing to get back in the car or on the plane, then do a couple of quieter activities to settle people down.

Next, a trip should be a little like Christmas, with kids getting new activities. It might be a video game (with earphones if possible for the comfort of other passengers) or an mp3 player loaded with songs the child or teen likes or a DVD player and some new DVD's or a travel version of a game (only if the kids aren't so competitive that the loser will get upset). By the way, mp3 players are great for kids who get motion sickness and can't look at a video game or a book while riding.

You can load the mp3 player with stories and music. Or, if you have a laptop computer, bring along a new game or two. There are free ones that can be downloaded. These things should be treated like Christmas presents--hidden until the day of travel and actually reserved until the new wears off the experience of traveling. If you are going on a long plane trip, don't give out the loot until everyone is just starting to get bored with looking out the window and putting the seat table up and down and reading the emergency card.

Finally, it helps to have snacks that are treats to the children but familiar enough to feel a little like home. Some kids have a hard time eating new foods and need to have something they know they like available. If you are on a road trip, you can also pack a cooler of bottled water and soft drinks (although limit the amount kids drink unless you want to visit a lot of rest areas).

If you look at travel from a child's perspective and keep in mind the key characteristics of kids, you will be able to plan a reasonably happy trip for the whole family.

Nature in Costa Rica

Nature in Costa Rica

Nature in Costa Rica is everywhere. I visited primarily to see the nature of this Central American country and was not disappointed. Pleasantly, because the wildlife leads to so much ecotourism in Costa Rica, the local people are generally very supportive of the nature there and work fiercely to protect it.

Currently, scientists calculate that around 25% of Costa Rica is now protected in the form of National Parks or privately-owned nature reserves. Conservationists from around the world flock to Costa Rica and have been of great help to the Costa Rican people in protecting the habitats and animals of Costa Rica.

There are currently 35 National Parks covering every habitat in Costa Rica and animals and plants can be seen almost countrywide. Without exception you have to pay a small fee to enter any of the parks - $10 seems like an average sum though some can be considerably higher or lower and of course taking a guide for the day will likely add an additional $20-30 onto the cost of your day out.

However, this money is spent in the right places and helps to support the environment and local communities.

Due to differences in altitudes and rainfall (plus having two coasts - the wetter Caribbean coast plus the drier Pacific coast) there are huge differences in the habitats present for nature in Costa Rica which not surprisingly affects the animals and plants you may see there.

Whilst wildlife can be seen anywhere there will always be certain areas that are better than others. So the first question really to consider when it comes to nature in Costa Rica is what it is that you'd actually like to see in particular? Or would you like to just generally see some animals?

If you make a "hotlist" of the animals you'd like to see, the next aspect is grabbing some of the wildlife guide books available (Field Guide To The Wildlife Of Costa Rica by C. Henderson is my personal favourite) so you can work out the best places to actually see the animals you're after.

To give you some ideas of what you may see, here is just a sampling of what I saw in Costa Rica last time: mexican spiny porcupine, anteater, monkeys, macaws, iguana, caimen, tarantulas, quetzals, coatis and agoutis. As I say, this is just a tiny sampling of all the amazing creatures there.

Top wildlife spotting areas if you are in need of some inspiration are Monte Verde, Manual Antonio and Corcovado, though be aware this last option is to remote that it can be difficult and expensive to get to, and facilities once you get there are likely to be basic at best. Even an Internet connection or reliable electricity may be too much to ask for in the far south of Costa Rica where jaguar and tapirs roam free.

Monte Verde and Manuel Antonio make a far more civilized start to seeing Costa Rican natural history where you can spend your daytime sweating in the rainforest, and your evenings relaxing in a bar, restaurant or, if you're lucky, by a resfreshing pool.
