Moving To UK - 5 Important Notes Of Caution

Moving To UK - 5 Important Notes Of Caution

When it comes to settling down in a new country, it is quite not easy. But people do it for several reasons. It might be professional growth, or some circumstantial pressures that they can not avoid.

This means that the relocation can either be by choice or even a forced one at times. However, this task is a real tough one, especially in the countries where the lifestyle & culture is so new to you.

In case you are one among those making an international relocation to the United Kingdom, here is one thing that you must prepare your self for – the cultural shock!

Here is a brief glimpse on the same:

I. Language

1. Usually, the people migrating from the United States of America to the United Kingdom take it very lightly. They think that these both are English speaking nations, both seem to be westernized, then where lies the problem! Well, they are wrong here & as a result they face a major cultural shock!

2. Well, language that is English, might sound similar but in the practical terms it is quite different for the two nations. The fact is that the similar words have a different meaning in UK and a different one in US.

3. For instance, potato snack – Well, for the US it is a 'chip' and for the UK it becomes 'crisp'. And a 'fry' for the US is a 'chip' for UK. Confusing, isn't it?

4. Well, the Queen's English dictionary is a hub of such classic examples.

5. You must learn the formal & informal usage of the words thoroughly.

6. Next, work on the exercises where you are able to interpret your statements with in the context of the given situation.

7. How ever, as you can not learn every thing in a day, be prepared that with the course of time you would have to adapt to the new version of English and that would be so difficult for you in case you belong to an English speaking nation on the native front.

8. People are there who with the time are also able to change their accent!

II. Laws

1. Another obvious change is in the laws of the country. Of course, the laws of one nation would be very different from another.

2. For instance driving. The Americans generally take a lot of time adjusting to the left hand side driving on the roads of UK.

3. As it is just the opposite of they have been practicing for years, they take a lot of time just to grasp the fact that driving on the left side is not wrong at the core.

III. Embrace the New Rights & Wrongs

1. To avoid the cultural shock accept one thing – that is you can not have absolute things. The right & wrong that you have been following till fate now must be refreshed for the obvious reasons and you must accept them whole heartedly & with a lot of patience.

2. For instance – for the United States Thanksgiving calls for a big celebration a sure vacation time. You have to accept that when you moved in to UK, you have left behind those vacations.

3. You can not look for the absolutes on the cultural front.

4. So, embrace the new culture that is the UK culture willingly & whole heartedly in order to settle better in the country.

IV. Lack of Preparation

1. With the lack of preparation, mentally as well as emotionally, the migration & the cultural shock torture you all the more.

2. Right from the beginning accept the fact & tell this to yourself every morning that UK is not US, it is a different nation and you have to make certain adjustments as you have moved in here permanently.

3. Indeed, moving overseas to a new place like the UK calls for a whole lot of preparations & sacrifices.

V. Accept the Changes With Spirit

Now besides the differences, here are some points that would help you adjust to the change very readily:

1. The bottom line is that if we have an open mind & are willing to experience a new adventure, this hard ordeal of migrating to the UK can be real fun!

2. Once you are willing to face the harsh realities, you would surely be able to overcome them. Just learn how to reject the realities sometimes and substitute your own thoughts there. After all you are the sole judge of your life & your priorities.

3. Think of all the positives in the issue, like the professional & financial growth you are getting with migrating to the UK, and there might be several others. After all when you have made the big decision of international relocation it should have some very concrete & convincing reasons!

4. Be ready for all sorts of the adjustments. After all, our struggle to survive in the personal jungles is what life is actually meant for. Start getting used to drive on the wrong side of the road, adapt the new words & their new meanings, and try relishing the 'so cute British accent.'

5. Forget the President and now start criticizing Mr. Prime Minister instead.

Last but certainly not the least is that moving to the UK does not cut you away from your roots. Do not ever turn your back towards your heritage. Remember there would always be some hope in this contradiction, as we are human being the natural contradictory creatures. So, while moving overseas to the UK, you just need to assimilate yourself in to the society & yet maintain your identity intact!
